Description

This novel will give the reader a glimpse into the lives of  9 individuals and families with exceptionalities.  Each story is true and from the perspective of the person or family living with the exceptionality and is a stand alone chapter. Shelley Kenow interviewed each family or person to get their perspective.  She also has the privilege of knowing and/or working with each individual/family in the book.   The saying, “You don’t know what someone’s life is like until you walk a mile in their shoes,” is very appropriate for these  stories of children and families who were told, “You can’t…”.

Those Who “Can’t…” Teach was written from the perspectives of the individuals and families who were told, “You can’t (read, have fun, get a drivers license, go to college, be happy, run, do math, etc)” but who didn’t listen to those voices.  Shelley and the families worked together to write their stories in a way that honors and respects their privacy but tells the story that needs to be told.

In the USA, 1 in 26 families is a family with an exceptionality.  The chances of working with, neighboring with, being related to, going to church with, having a classmate with, teaching a student with, or knowing someone with an exceptionality is 15%.  This book will help the reader have a better understanding of the similarities as well as the differences of the families or individuals they may come in contact with during their lifetime.
